The Grand Mosque

Well, I think that this visit requires its own post.

The Grand Mosque is an amazing place - it is the most beautiful place I have seen on my travels around Abu Dhabi City.   It is old architecture set amongst the new that surrounds it.  It is glorious in its architecture, landscaping and elaborate and intricate detailing.  The photographs do not do justice to it; nor to the scale of it.  These photos lead you up to the mosque and the exterior to the mosque.

With the souring temperatures of the season that Abu Dhabi has, in many places you will find people with hoses in hand attempting to keep grass and plants well nourished.  For some it appears to be a full time job!

The mosque is made all the more impressive by the fact that it is so white.  We were impressed by the workmanship and the beauty of the buildings.

We travelled by bus to get there and
it was a scorching day.  As we entered the mosque we had to go to
a fitting room to get an abaya and sheila
(head scarf pronounced shayla) to wear.  We thought we were hot in our own clothes, but when we donned the abaya it felt like being in an oven.

We are getting used to the beads of sweat when out and about, but this was something very new.

When we entered the female prayer room our  eyes were overwhelmed.  It is an amazing and beautiful part of the mosque.  It was filled with tourists and their cameras clicking, yet despite this, it was a very special place indeed.

The gold details, the mosaic floor tiles, the pillars, the ponds, the chandeliers...all contributed to quite an experience!

If I was to leave this place tomorrow I'd be satisfied that I've seen one of the treasures that Abu Dhabi has to offer.
